Module 9: Biomarker Discovery Exercise: An Integrative Use of Genomic, Proteomic, and Bioinformatics Data in a Virtual Translational Research Study

FACULTY

Scot R. Weinberger, President, CEO and Founder of GenNext Technologies™ Inc.

Dr. Ron Orlando, Assistant Professor Complex Carbohydrate Research Center and Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Chemistry University of Georgia

Dr. Tracy M. Andacht, Director and co-Founder of the Proteomics Resource Facility at the University of Georgia

Cynthia Nakatani, Independent Consultant, Data Analysis and Bioinformatics

Dr. Shawn Levy, Assistant Professor and Director of the Microarray Shared Resource Vanderbilt University Medical Center

The Biomarker Discovery Exercise is an integrative task, where students leverage their collective knowledge of genomics, proteomics, and data analysis to create a predictive diagnostic panel. Authentic data generated by education partner products are evaluated by the group to elucidate biomarker candidates, identify associated genes and proteins, and to create a multi-marker assay with effective positive predictive value.

A keystone clinical problem will be defined and reviewed. Attendees and instructors will interactively define the clinical study, creating both control and experimental groups in accordance with good clinical research guidelines. Genomics data will be analyzed for clusters of genes that correlate with the central clinical question, as will both top-down and bottom-up proteomics data. Gene to protein and protein to gene correlative studies will be performed using various bioinformatic solutions. Putative biomarker panels will be evaluated using Receiver Operator Characteristic Curves, and a final assay with reasonable efficacy will be created.
